Small earthquake recorded off eastern Maine

Officials say a small earthquake has shaken an area of rural eastern Maine.

The U.S. Geological Survey says a magnitude 3.3 earthquake was recorded just before 7 a.m. Tuesday about 6 miles northeast of Eastport, Maine.

Some people reported hearing a boom, while others reported hearing a rumble. The Washington County sheriff's department says there have been no reports of damage.

Bonita Jones, of Pembroke, says she thought someone hit her house with a box truck. She said her husband, who was unloading a barge off Eastport, called to check on her and reported that the barge was rocking in the water after the earthquake.

The largest earthquake recorded in Maine, with a magnitude of 5.1, happened in 1904. The largest quake in the state over the last 40 years was a 4.0 magnitude tremblor about 3 miles west of Hollis Center in 2012.
