Skinny jeans could evade proposed school dress code policy

Published June 02, 2016

A North Carolina county's education committee is suggesting a proposed ban on tight pants should be altered to no longer mention skinny jeans following opposition from students and parents.

The New Hanover County School System last month said it was considering a policy that prohibits all students from wearing leggings, skinny jeans and "any other excessively tight fitting pants" unless worn with a top or dress that "must cover the posterior in its entirety."

District spokeswoman Valita Quattlebaum tells news outlets that the Policy Committee of the New Hanover County Board of Education proposed the change Wednesday. Under the new policy, leggings and tight-fitting pants would still be banned.

The proposed changes will go before the full board for a first reading at the board's June 7 meeting in Wilmington.
