Short trip to lockup for man accused of doing a doughnut on jail lawn, crashing into flagpole

Published August 06, 2015

Deputies didn't have to go far to lock up a Florida man after authorities say he drove in circles on the lawn in front of the county jail and then crashed into a flag pole.

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office says 31-year-old Michael Lee Roberts pulled his SUV up to the jail's main door and entered the building Monday evening.

Deputies repeatedly told Roberts that he couldn't park on the sidewalk. Officials say Roberts finally got back into the SUV and drove in reverse down the walkway until he hit a bench. He started driving over the landscaping before hitting the flagpole. A swarm of deputies quickly pulled Roberts from the SUV and handcuffed him.

Roberts was booked and then released the next day on $4,000 bail.
