Shooter eludes Las Vegas police after bullets hit near officers making traffic stop

Las Vegas police searched a residential neighborhood with guns drawn but failed to find a shooter after bullets whizzed past a pair of officers making an arrest during a traffic stop, authorities said Tuesday.

No one was wounded, but at least two bullets hit a utility pole near the officers about 8 a.m. Tuesday near Stewart Avenue and 21st Street, police Officer Barbara Morgan said. It wasn't immediately clear where the shots came from.

"No one was wounded. The police officers did not return fire," Morgan said. "We didn't find any suspects."

Las Vegas police sealed off the neighborhood about a mile east of downtown Las Vegas for more than two hours, with officers wearing body armor walking sidewalks and other officers with dogs searching back yards.

A police helicopter circled overhead not far from U.S. 95 and Eastern Avenue.

Morgan said police arriving after the initial gunfire reported hearing at least one more gunshot.
