Sheriff: Officers didn't stand by and watch teens drown

Published April 22, 2016

Associated Press

Police on Florida's Gulf Coast are denying accusations that officers didn't do enough to rescue three teenagers who stole a car, crashed it into a cemetery pond and then drowned.

Bloggers have been commenting on dashcam video posted online of the March 30 crash in Pinellas County, saying police stood by while the teenagers drowned. Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said the footage was misleadingly edited to omit several moments from the original.

He also posted a video Friday showing footage from a different cruiser's dashcam. He says deputies waded into the water and tried to save the girls — and that the footage showing two officers walking by with clothes in hand proves his version.
