Sheriff: Man who died in S. Carolina hotel acted erratically

Published August 11, 2016

Associated Press

The Greenville County sheriff says a 39-year-old man died last week as three deputies were escorting him to a lobby hotel to see health professionals.

Sheriff Steve Loftis said Wednesday that Sheldon Robinson was pronounced dead by paramedics Aug. 6 at the Wyndham Hotel. Loftis said deputies were called to the hotel after the man banged his head on the wall of his room and reported he was suffering from anxiety.

Loftis said deputies were escorting Robinson when he lay down in the elevator. The sheriff says Robinson became combative and unresponsive so deputies tried to revive him.

Greenville County medics also tried to revive him, but were unable to. Loftis says Robinson was never under arrest. He says the State Law Enforcement Division is investigating.
