Sheriff: 9 deputies fired in death of 21-year-old restrained man at jail in coastal Georgia

Published May 21, 2015

Associated Press

A coastal Georgia sheriff has fired nine of his deputies in connection with the death of a restrained man in a jail cell several months ago.

Chatham County Sheriff Al St. Lawrence released a statement Friday saying deputies were fired based on the findings of an investigations into the Jan. 1 death of 22-year-old Matthew Ajibade. Results of those investigations were not disclosed because the case is still considered open as prosecutors weigh possible charges.

However, the sheriff's office released a February memo reminding deputies that they are prohibited from using stun guns "when a detainee is in full restraints." Ajibade was found dead in a restraining chair. Sheriff's officials have said he was restrained after becoming violent and injuring three deputies.

Ajibade had been arrested on domestic violence charges.
