Settlement reached in UVa swim team hazing lawsuit

Published March 29, 2016

Associated Press

A former University of Virginia swim team member and five upperclassmen who he said hazed him have reached a confidential settlement.

Attorneys for plaintiff Anthony Marcantonio and the five defendants announced the resolution Tuesday in a joint statement. Full terms of the settlement were not revealed.

But the agreement withdrew a number of claims made by Marcantonio, including allegations he was sexually assaulted and forced to drink alcohol.

Marcantonio filed the federal lawsuit in Charlottesville in June 2015 after he said the five subjected him and other incoming team members to hazing in the fall of 2014.

Marcantonio said he was ostracized by the team when he reported the hazing to his coach and administrators. He ultimately left U.Va.

U.Va. said it would not comment.
