A federal customs and border protection official confirms a second passenger from Northwest Flight 253 was handcuffed and searched after a police dog reacted to his baggage, according to the Detroit News.

Officials originally denied the incident despite repeated accounts by witnesses who said they saw a man get questioned and led away in handcuffs.

Ronald G. Smith, chief U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer in the Detroit area, told the paper the man was interviewed, searched and released after nothing was found. He was not arrested or detained, Smith said.

Nigerian man Umar Farouk Abdulmuttalb was arrested on Christmas Day after allegedly trying to blow up Flight 253 with highly powerful explosives sewn into his underwear.
