Search over for missing NY toddler; her whereabouts unclear

Published February 23, 2016

Associated Press

Authorities in Syracuse, New York, say they have stopped searching for a toddler who disappeared over the weekend with her father. The father is in custody, but police haven't said if they've found her.

Twenty-one-month-old Maddox Lawrence disappeared with her father, Ryan, on Saturday night, and an Amber Alert was issued early Sunday. The alert said 24-year-old Ryan Lawrence left a message saying he was going to harm himself and possibly the child.

Authorities say Ryan Lawrence was taken into custody Monday in the village of Baldwinsville, 10 miles northwest of Syracuse.

The statewide alert was canceled Tuesday afternoon, soon after divers searched Syracuse's Inner Harbor. It's an inlet off the eastern end of Onondaga Lake.

Police have scheduled a news conference for 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
