School forbids student to wear military sash at graduation

District officials say a Pennsylvania high school will make changes after a student was told he couldn't wear a red military sash signifying his commitment to enlist in the Marines during a graduation commencement.

Pennlive.com reports (http://bit.ly/1Uj9PlC ) the student signed a contract to enlist and was given the sash to wear at his Middletown Area High School graduation last week.

The boy's mother says an assistant principal told her son he couldn't wear the sash because he had to "dress appropriately."

District Superintendent Lori Suski says the district doesn't have a policy on graduation regalia, but that administrators have historically only allowed school-issued regalia at the commencement.

Suski says the school now plans to buy red, white, and blue cords for students committed to military service.
