Saudi student who caused Fort Sam bomb scare pleads guilty to evading detention, illegal entry

Published May 03, 2016

Associated Press

A college student from Saudi Arabia has pleaded guilty to forcing his way onto San Antonio's Fort Sam Houston in an incident in which he claimed he had a bomb.

The San Antonio Express-News (http://bit.ly/1xUipjx ) reports 24-year-old Mutasim Abdul-Aziz H. Alati pleaded guilty Thursday to a felony charge of evading detention with a vehicle and illegal entry onto a military base, a misdemeanor. A federal judge sentenced him to time served.

The Nov. 23 incident prompted a four-hour lockdown. No bomb or explosives were found.

Alati was a University of the Incarnate Word student at the time.

His visas were revoked and court documents said he'd be accompanied by FBI agents on his trip back to Saudi Arabia.

Defense attorney Kevin Collins blamed Alati's actions on stress and marijuana.
