Saudi Arabia seeks native convicted of sex assault in Colorado

Published January 13, 2015

Associated Press

A Saudi Arabian official is asking a Colorado judge to let a Saudi man return to his home country to serve probation and get sexual-offender treatment.

Homaidan al-Turki was convicted in Colorado of sexually assaulting his housekeeper and treating her as a virtual slave.

The issue was unresolved after a daylong hearing Thursday. The hearing will resume Oct. 31 with more testimony.

Prosecutors questioned whether Saudi Arabia would give al-Turki effective supervision. They also questioned whether al-Turki was even a candidate for treatment since he has refused to participate in a sex-offender program in state prison.

His lawyers say the treatment program violates al-Turki's religious beliefs.

Al-Turki is serving a minimum eight-year sentence but could remain in prison indefinitely if he continues to refuse sex offender treatment.
