San Francisco to announce new LAPD veteran as police chief

The mayor of San Francisco plans to announce that he has picked a veteran Los Angeles deputy chief to lead the city's police department, which has been under scrutiny after a series of racially charged incidents.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports Mayor Ed Lee plans to announce Tuesday that he has hired 52-year-old William Scott to lead the police department.

Scott, who is African-American, is a 25-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department and heads the department's 1,700-member South Bureau.

Lee forced Suhr to resign after police fatally shot two minority suspects carrying knives, then transcripts surfaced showing officers using racial slurs in text messages and a young black woman was shot dead as police tried to pull her from a stolen car.
