San Diego police officer initially said he didn't see weapon before fatally shooting transient

A San Diego police officer who shot and killed a transient within seconds of exiting his car initially told investigators that he didn't see any weapon but said days later that he recalled thinking the suspect might be carrying a knife.

Evidence released Wednesday shows Officer Neal Browder answered "no" when asked the night of the April shooting if he saw a weapon, at which time his attorney said his client wouldn't elaborate.

Five days later, police let Browder watch a surveillance video for about 20 minutes before another interview.

Browder said in the second interview that he saw 42-year-old Fridoon Nehad carrying what looked like a metal object as the suspect walked down an alley toward the police car. Browder was responding to a 911 call about a knife-wielding suspect.
