Reported SC mall shooting may not have involved gunfire

Published February 22, 2016

Associated Press

Police now say the reported shooting at a South Carolina mall may not have involved any gunshots at all.

Police said in a news release Monday that they haven't found any shell casings at the Columbiana Centre, and witnesses who originally reported seeing two men fire in the air after a fistfight Saturday night aren't as confident about their stories.

Authorities say they found a book bag in the woods with Airsoft guns, which look like real guns and fire tiny BB-size pellets. Some of the guns make popping sounds when fired. Police also are seeking more surveillance video from stores.

Hundreds of people either ran away or hid in stores after people said they saw men shooting near the food court at the mall about a dozen miles from downtown Columbia on Saturday night.

No one was injured.
