Prosecutors: Officers justified in fatally shooting suspect

Published May 09, 2016

Associated Press

A prosecutor says two Baton Rouge police officers acted in self-defense and were justified in fatally shooting a man who shot and wounded them after a car chase in February.

East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Hillar Moore's office released body camera and dashcam videos from the Feb. 13 gunbattle that killed the 22-year-old suspect, Calvin Smith. The shooting lasted about 20 seconds and wounded officers Theodore Smith III and Sean Garic.

The video shows Calvin Smith exit his car and open fire on the two officers with a semi-automatic rifle as the officers arrive in their vehicles at the end of the chase. The officers returned fire, fatally wounding Smith.

Moore says Smith fired at least 20 shots, while the officers fired at least 34 shots between them.
