Prosecutors: Off-duty police officer with young child in car chases, fatally shoots ex-wife

Published May 03, 2016

Authorities say an off-duty New Jersey officer chased down and fatally shot his recently divorced wife, then put the gun to his head and held police at bay before he surrendered.

The shooting occurred shortly before 11:30 a.m. Tuesday on a street in Asbury Park.

Authorities say Neptune Township police Sgt. Phil Seidle had his 7-year-old daughter in his vehicle while he apparently chased after a car driven by his ex-wife, Tamara. Authorities say moments after the chase ended, he got out and fired several shots into her vehicle.

Tamara Seidle was taken to a hospital, where she died. The couple had nine children.

Monmouth County prosecutors say Phil Seidle is in custody, but it wasn't immediately clear what charges he was facing.
