Prosecutors, defense attorneys in Hastert hush-money case to be in court for status hearing

Federal prosecutors and attorneys for Dennis Hastert will be in court to determine how the hush-money case against the former U.S. House speaker will proceed.

Thursday's status hearing will be before U.S. District Judge Thomas Durkin in Chicago.

Hastert is charged with violating banking rules and lying to the FBI about promising to pay $3.5 million in hush money to conceal misconduct from his days as a high school teacher. The Illinois Republican is not required to be in court Thursday.

Earlier this week, Durkin approved prosecutors' request to keep some evidence against Hastert secret. It's a move that could mean details of the case may never become public.

For example, the indictment doesn't say what he was allegedly trying to keep secret.
