Prosecutor: Officer justified in shooting motorist

Published March 24, 2017

Associated Press

A prosecutor says a New Jersey police officer was justified in shooting a motorist as they struggled during a stop that was captured by the officer's dashboard camera.

The video showed the Haddon Township officer was seemingly unaware he had shot Edmond Brown Jr. as they fought on Oct. 29.

Camden County Prosecutor Mary Eva Colalillo says the recording shows Brown drive off with the officer clinging to the driver's side window. The vehicle slammed into a parked car and the officer tried to get Brown to the ground when the fight began.

The prosecutor says the officer believed Brown was trying to get his gun and the officer fired one shot, which struck Brown's right thigh. They continued to grapple until the officer handcuffed Brown.

Brown faces multiple charges.
