Pregnant Cuban woman, 5 other migrants reach Florida shore

Published June 07, 2016

Associated Press

A group of Cuban migrants made it to South Florida aboard a makeshift sailboat they christened the "Barack Obama."

Local media outlets report the four men and two women made it to Lauderdale-by-the-Sea north of Fort Lauderdale on Monday night. They told reporters they were at sea for nine days.

Cathy Crawley, who was vacationing from Texas, told the SunSentinel (http://bit.ly/1X84kwb ) she saw the migrants jump out of the boat and start "kissing the beach."

Television stations report that one of the women is pregnant. She was taken to a hospital for observation while the other migrants sat on the beach and waited to speak to agents from U.S. Customs and Border Patrol.

Under the "wet-foot, dry-foot" policy, Cubans who reach U.S. shores are usually allowed to stay.
