Police: West Virginia deputy injured, suspect in hospital

Published July 01, 2016

Associated Press

West Virginia State Police say a 25-year-old man ran over a deputy sheriff and tried to break into a home before he suffered a medical emergency in the back of a police cruiser.

Police said the situation unfolded Thursday evening in Nicholas County with a report of a stolen car.

They say suspect Kniles Akers of Summersville was in critical condition Friday and the unidentified Nicholas County deputy was being treated for broken bones and internal injuries.

Police say the deputy made a traffic stop after a vehicle was reported stolen and that Akers, who was driving, became combative, took the deputy's cruiser and ran over the officer. Less than an hour later, state troopers say they were called to a reported home invasion and took Akers into custody.
