Police shoot, wound suspect in northern Alabama

Published April 27, 2016

Associated Press

Police say a suspect in a police chase has been shot and wounded by an officer in northern Alabama.

Cullman Police Chief Kenny Culpepper tells Al.com that two officers stopped the man about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, believing he was a suspect in a police pursuit from Monday night.

Culpepper said the man ignored the officers' orders, saying he wouldn't go with them and that "they'll have to kill him."

Culpepper said the man pulled a revolver from his pocket, refused commands to drop it and was shot by one of the officers.

Culpepper tells The Cullman Times that the suspect, whom he identified as Billy Joe Martin of Cullman, was shot once. He told the newspaper that Officer Don Slocumb and Lt. Gene Bates weren't hurt. Further details about the officers and the suspect weren't released.
