Police and motorcyclists escorting the body of a soldier home from Afghanistan stopped to pull a South Bend woman, her mother and her 6-year-old twins from a burning Jeep after a fiery crash in northwest Indiana.
Porter County police say 35-year-old Ana Pina was driving west on US 30 Saturday when her Jeep was rear-ended by a pickup truck. The Jeep caught fire and crossed the median in front of the eastbound procession for Spc. Robert J. Tauteris Jr.
Police say a sheriff's deputy, state police trooper and Patriot Guard riders pulled the victims from the wreckage.
Four people were hospitalized.
Tauteris was one of four soldiers with an Indiana-based National Guard unit who were killed Jan. 6 by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan.
