Published April 18, 2016

Associated Press

Police say an officer shot and wounded a man just south of Shreveport, Louisiana, Saturday after he pointed a handgun at the officer.

Local media report the shooting took place at 2:30 a.m. during a traffic stop.

Bossier City police say the officer approached a vehicle when twenty-year-old Malik Wortham allegedly pointed a handgun at the officer. Police say the officer then fired and struck Wortham.

Police say Wortham was taken to University Health hospital in Shreveport with non-life threatening injuries.

The officer, whose name was not released, was not injured.

Police say Wortham faces several charges including attempted first degree murder. The vehicle's driver faces a charge of marijuana possession.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation.
