Off-duty trooper and armed citizen hailed as heroes after returning fire on In-N-Out gunman

Police identified the man accused of opening fire Saturday at a recently opened In-N-Out Burger location in Twin Falls, Idaho, revealing he was subdued by an off-duty state trooper and an armed citizen who returned fire during the shooting.
The suspected gunman, identified as Chad Williams, 24, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after fatally shooting an employee and a customer, according to Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks.
Authorities believe Williams acted alone in the attack. He was found dead near the restaurant.

"We want to take a moment and commend the actions of the off-duty officer and the citizen and their heroic action to stop this incident," Hicks said during a news conference Sunday. "We believe their actions helped drive the suspect away from the scene, preventing further casualties."
Three people died, and seven others were wounded in the shootout, city spokesperson Josh Palmer previously said.
Authorities said two of the injured victims have been released from the hospital, while three are in stable condition and two remain in critical condition.

Hicks described the incident as one of the most "chaotic" situations his department has faced, saying first responders encountered a scenario unlike anything many law enforcement officers experience in their careers.
The investigation has expanded to include multiple agencies, including local law enforcement partners and the FBI.
FBI Salt Lake City Special Agent in Charge Robert Boles said the bureau has committed its full resources to the investigation.
"We have committed the full weight of our resources to the Twin Falls Police Department, deploying every investigative and intelligence tool at our disposal," Boles said. "Our evidence response teams and victim services specialists are also on the ground, working tirelessly to support both the investigation and those impacted."

Officials said officers from the Meridian, Caldwell and Nampa police departments were sworn in to assist the Idaho State Police with patrols in Twin Falls.
