Police: Father charged with endangerment after baby dies while he smoked marijuana

Published November 03, 2016

Associated Press

A New Jersey man has been accused of smoking marijuana instead of feeding his baby daughter, who died.

Javon Thomas was arrested by police Monday after his 9-month-old daughter died. He was charged Tuesday with child endangerment.

Charging documents allege he neglected Madison Thomas by missing several feedings while using marijuana.

Mercer County prosecutor's office spokeswoman Casey DeBlasio tells Trenton's The Times newspaper (http://bit.ly/1AVilx9) the baby didn't show any external signs of abuse.

An autopsy on the baby's body is planned. The investigation is ongoing.

DeBlasio says it's unclear how long Javon Thomas had been caring for his daughter.

He's jailed on $75,000 bond and can't be reached for comment by phone. It's unclear if he has an attorney to represent him. He's scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.
