Police evacuate department, homes after woman brings in grenade

Published August 30, 2015

Associated Press

A hand grenade a woman found in her grandfather's belongings prompted police in Vermont to evacuate their department and surrounding homes after she brought it into the station.

South Burlington police say the cleared the department and nearby buildings on Saturday as a precautionary measure because they weren't sure if the grenade was live. A state police bomb squad was called in to deal with it.

Police said Sunday they still did not know whether the grenade was inactive or dangerous. They urge residents who find potentially explosive devices to leave them where they are and call the police.
