Philadelphia parents starved, fatally beat son, police say

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

A Philadelphia child is dead and his parents in custody, charged with beating and starving the boy to death.

Police say 6-year-old Khalil Wimes weighed less than 30 pounds when he died Monday night of blunt-force trauma to the head.

Authorities arrested the boy's parents, 48-year-old Latiff Hadi and 44-year-old Tina Cuffie, on Tuesday and charged them with counts including murder, aggravated assault and child endangerment. Court documents list Floyd Wimes as an alias for Hadi.

Family members tell WPVI-TV the boy and other children had previously been removed from the couple's home but were returned to them despite the family's objections.

Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey tells WCAU-TV the boy's body showed clear signs of abuse.
