Pa. day care owner gets probation in baby's death

Published November 17, 2014

Associated Press

A day care owner and her daughter have been sentenced to a year probation in the death of a 10-month-old baby who police believe was killed by a 7-year-old.

Forty-nine-year-old Loretta Bray pleaded no contest Monday to endangering the welfare of children. Her 22-year-old daughter, Ashley Swann, pleaded guilty to the same charge.

Authorities believe Bray's 7-year-old granddaughter beat the 10-month-old and threw her onto a carpeted concrete floor, fracturing the baby's skull. Police say it happened in 2008 at Bray's in-home day care center when Swann left the children alone to change a diaper.

Police didn't charge the granddaughter because of her age.

The day care has since closed. Bray and her daughter both apologized in court Monday for what happened.
