Ohio kidnapper's body scheduled to be claimed by family member representative

Published January 13, 2015

Associated Press

As authorities investigate how Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro managed to commit suicide while in prison, a representative from his family was expected to claim his body days after he hung himself in his cell with a bedsheet.

The Franklin County coroner says Castro's body was scheduled to be claimed Thursday night. Castro was a month into his life sentence for holding three women captive in his home for a decade when he committed suicide Tuesday.

The 53-year-old Castro was able to commit suicide despite his placement in protective custody, which involves checks every 30 minutes.

The former school-bus driver had been taken off suicide watch while in county jail.

The reviews will look at the facts of Castro's suicide and whether he received adequate medical and mental health care while in custody.
