Officials: 2 elementary school students, ages 6 and 7, caught taking handguns to Ky. school

School officials say a kindergartner and a first-grader took two handguns — one of them loaded — to an eastern Kentucky elementary school.

Knox County schools spokesman Frank Shelton says a student saw the guns on a school bus Thursday morning and alerted staff at Dewitt Elementary School in Flat Lick. The two boys accused of taking the pistols to school in a backpack are brothers, ages 6 and 7.

Shelton says the guns were confiscated at the school, which was briefly put on lockdown, and no one was injured.

He says students were taking home a letter from the district's superintendent about the incident, which is being investigated by Kentucky State Police.
