Officer's attorneys seek expanded questioning in shooting

Published August 02, 2016

Associated Press

Defense attorneys for a former South Carolina police officer accused in the shooting death of a black motorist who was running away have filed a motion seeking more thorough questioning of potential jurors.

The Post and Courier of Charleston (http://bit.ly/2agKCc7 ) reports the motion filed Monday suggests that picking a jury in the trial of former North Charleston officer Michael Slager is likely to be lengthy.

A hearing is scheduled for Tuesday at 2 p.m. to consider various motions in the case.

In another filing, lead defense attorney Andy Savage asked that potential jurors be sent written questionnaires so they could express their thoughts on race relations and police conduct without fear of public embarrassment or reprisal.

Walter Scott was shot in April 2015 while running from a traffic stop. Slager's trial is scheduled for October.
