Officer accused of slamming suspect's head is convicted

Published October 28, 2016

Associated Press

An Ohio jury has found a police officer accused of slamming a handcuffed suspect's head against a cruiser door guilty of assault.

The Sandusky Register reports (http://bit.ly/2eWJQ6m) Vermilion police officer Aaron Bolton was found guilty of a misdemeanor assault charge Thursday in Erie County Common Pleas Court.

Jurors acquitted Bolton of felony charges of assault and aggravated assault in connection with the September 2015 arrest.

Bolton's attorney, George Gerken, says they respect the jury's decision.

Prosecutors say police body cameras captured the officer's actions.

Bolton is to be sentenced Dec. 12. He could be sentenced to up to six months in jail and fined up to $1,000.

The suspended officer has been on paid administrative leave since his indictment. There's no word on his employment status following the verdict.
