NYPD investigating chair attack at Chelsea restaurant as possible hate crime

Published May 03, 2016

Associated Press

A brawl inside a New York City restaurant in which two men were hit over the head with a chair is being investigated by police as a possible hate crime.

Police say it happened Tuesday night at the Dallas BBQ restaurant in Chelsea. They're investigating whether anti-gay slurs were used.

A cellphone video of the confrontation shows a chaotic scene. The assailant hurls a chair over the victims, knocking one to the ground and the other into a chair. He also punches and kicks one of the victims as other patrons try to subdue him.

Both victims refused medical attention.

There have been no arrests.

Councilman Corey Johnson, whose district covers Chelsea, issued a statement saying he is appalled by the "senseless act of anti-LGBT hate violence."
