NYPD body camera pilot program should record more stops, store footage longer, review finds

A review of a body camera pilot program at the nation's largest police department has found that many changes are needed.

Inspector General Philip Eure (yoor-EE') of the New York Police Department says in a report released Thursday that questions on the implementation of body cameras have yet to be fully addressed.

Among them: How long the video should be stored, who should have access to it and what kinds of stops warrant recording.

The 44-page report draws on interviews with officers involved in the seven-month program, prosecutors, union officials and police supervisors, along with a review of other cities' programs.

Some police reform advocates have called for more body cameras as a way to increase accountability and transparency.
