NY woman, companion tell Pa. trooper that cocaine is homemade soap, get jailed on drug charges

Homemade soap? Nope.

Pennsylvania state troopers say that was the exchange that landed a New York City duo in jail on cocaine trafficking charges.

The (Easton) Times-Express reports (http://bit.ly/HQVdfo ) that 26-year-old Annadel Cruz and 30-year-old Alexander Bernstein were stopped for speeding Thursday in a rental car on Interstate 78 in South Whitehall Township, outside Allentown.

Troopers say they smelled marijuana and found more than 4 pounds of a white powdery substance wrapped in tape in a factory compartment on a side wall of the car.

Police say Cruz claimed the packages contained soap she had made but police say the drugs field-tested positive for cocaine.

The couple are represented by public defenders and remained in the Lehigh County Jail on Friday, awaiting a Nov. 21 preliminary hearing.
