A suburban New York police officer has been stabbed in the face and the suspect has been shot and critically wounded by another officer.

The incident happened at 1:20 p.m. Saturday in Central Islip on Long Island.

Suffolk County police say officers responded to a 911 call and found 40-year-old Mark Caraway armed with knives. They say Caraway was confrontational and stabbed an officer in the face. Another officer shot Caraway once in the abdomen.

The wounded officer was taken to a hospital, where he is in serious condition after facial surgery. Caraway is hospitalized in critical condition.

Charges against Caraway are pending. It's not known if he has an attorney who can speak for him.
