NY man gets prison for killing rehab center guard

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

A 26-year-old man who admitted stabbing a security guard to death at a drug abuse rehab center in upstate New York has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.

Richard Giga (GEE'-guh) pleaded guilty in August to second-degree murder for the slaying of 60-year-old Leland Wood at the Renaissance Project inpatient center in Wawarsing on Oct. 6, 2010. He also stabbed nurse Keri Reynolds.

Authorities said Giga's girlfriend broke up with him a few days earlier. He stabbed Wood, then climbed into Reynolds' car and stabbed her in the chest, causing the car to overturn. He was going to take the car to his girlfriend's house.

The Ulster County district attorney says Giga was sentenced Tuesday after Reynolds and three of Wood's relatives addressed the judge.
