NY judge sets hearing for terror suspect to try to prove his statements should be suppressed

Over government objections, a New York judge says a Libyan man facing terrorism charges is entitled to a hearing to prove his claims that his statements to the FBI were coerced.

Judge Lewis Kaplan scheduled a hearing for next week after hearing arguments Wednesday from lawyers.

Abu Anas al-Libi has asked the judge to suppress statements he made on his plane ride to America a week after he was snatched off the streets of Tripoli in October 2013. He says they were coerced, and he was abused physically and psychologically.

He has pleaded not guilty to charges he conspired in the bombing of two U.S. embassies in Africa in 1998. The attacks killed 224 people, including a dozen Americans.

The government says al-Libi was properly advised of his rights.
