NY crane co. official gets prison for bribery

Published November 17, 2014

Associated Press

A Long Island crane company official will spend two to six years in prison for bribing New York City's former chief crane inspector.

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. announced the sentencing Tuesday of Michael Sackaris. He was the "de facto owner" of Nu-Way Crane Service in Suffolk County from 2002 to 2007.

The prosecutor said Sackaris gave about 20 cash bribes between December 2000 and January 2008 to James Delayo, the former inspector.

Delayo was sentenced in June to two to six years in prison for taking bribes to fake inspection and licensing exam results.

The 2008 charges against Delayo stemmed from a crackdown on corruption in the construction industry. It began after two crane collapses that killed nine people.
