No decision yet in Illinois' transgender bathroom case

A federal magistrate judge will not make an immediate decision on whether to stop transgender students at a suburban Chicago school from using girls' locker rooms and restrooms.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeffrey Gilbert said during Monday's hearing that he plans to issue a report with his recommendation to U.S. District Judge Jorge Alonso. It wasn't clear when that would happen.

The injunction request stems from a lawsuit filed by conservative groups on behalf of dozens of parents with links to Palatine-based Township High School District 211. They say federal authorities forced the district to adopt a policy that tramples on the privacy rights of other students.

Classes started Monday.

One transgender student at William Fremd High School drew attention to the issue last year when she complained to federal education officials for being denied access.
