No charges for officer in fatal S. Carolina college shooting

Published March 04, 2016

Associated Press

State police have cleared a campus police officer who shot and killed a man at a small South Carolina college last year.

The State Law Enforcement Division told local media outlets Thursday that Spartanburg Methodist College Officer Andrew Tomlinson would not be charged in the Nov. 9 shooting death of 20-year-old Delvin Tyrell Simmons.

Authorities say Tomlinson found Simmons breaking into cars on campus that night and shot him after Simmons hit the officer with his car. Tomlinson wasn't seriously hurt.

Simmons was an honor student at nearby Limestone College. Tomlinson had 25 years of experience in law enforcement. He had worked at the school for less than two months.
