NJ jury deliberating case of slain British tourist

Published November 17, 2014

A New Jersey jury is weighing the fate of a man who admits killing one of Britain's most eligible bachelors.

The jury in the murder trial of Robert Davies of North Wildwood began deliberating the case Tuesday afternoon. It adjourned for the day without reaching a verdict.

Davies told the jury he acted in self-defense when he fatally stabbed Lavern Paul Ritch in August 2007. It happened in Margate, a beach town just south of Atlantic City.

Davies says he thought Ritch was part of a group that meant to attack him. He says he learned later that Ritch wanted to help him.

Ritch was once a contestant on the British version of the "American Gladiators" TV show. He hailed from Pennarth, Wales.
