New Jersey police officer gets three years for evidence room drug thefts

A veteran New Jersey police officer has been sentenced to three years in state prison for stealing cocaine from an evidence room under his control.

Albert Annuzzi, who took the drugs for personal use, must serve at least two years of the sentence imposed Wednesday before becoming eligible for parole. He also forfeited his pension and will be barred from public employment in New Jersey.

The 47-year-old Matawan resident, who served 22 years with the Piscataway Police Department, had pleaded guilty last month to official misconduct as part of a plea deal with Middlesex County prosecutors.

The drug thefts occurred from January 2010 until Annuzzi's arrest in April 2011. He was serving as the department's evidence officer when the thefts occurred.
