New Jersey girl jumps from balcony of burning house into arms caught by waiting police

Published February 04, 2016

Associated Press

Authorities say a young girl jumped from the balcony of a burning townhome building and was safely caught by waiting police officers.

The girl was not injured in the fire. But her name and age have not been released.

It's not yet clear what sparked Tuesday's fire in Mahwah. Authorities say it apparently started shortly before 4 p.m. on the top floor of the three-story building and extended into an attic.

The blaze was extinguished about an hour later.

The building had fire damage on the top floor and roof and water damage on the lower floors.
