NC Sheriff: Deputy on 911 call ambushed by heavily armed man

Published March 16, 2017

Associated Press

Authorities say a North Carolina deputy is recovering after being ambushed by a heavily armed man who called 911 and opened fire on the first lawman arriving at his door.

Guilford County Sheriff BJ Barnes said Tuesday that three-year-veteran Deputy Matthew Self was shot by Donald Ordie Meador Jr. and returned fire on Monday evening. Barnes said in a statement that Self is in stable condition.

Barnes says tear gas forced Meador out of the house after a seven-hour standoff. Mutiple news media outlets quoted him as saying that Meador then tried to kill himself, but the bullet only passed through his cheek. He is also listed in stable condition at a hospital.

Barnes says Meador wore a bulletproof vest and was armed with a small arsenal of guns.
