More centuries-old graves discovered in St. Augustine

More human bones believed to be centuries old have been uncovered in downtown St. Augustine.

Archaeologists worked in an open pit last week to study several partial graves found under the road during a dig for a utility project. Tourists visiting America's oldest city gathered to gawk and ask questions.

City archaeologist Carl Halbirt uncovered other bone fragments earlier in January on the same street, which led to more searching and new discoveries.

The remains are believed to be connected to the Los Remedios church, a Catholic institution that served St. Augustine from 1572 to 1702.

The St. Augustine Record reports that Catholic Spaniards, Native Americans and slaves were all buried in the church graveyard.

Halbirt says four graves were discovered, and one was disturbed by the utility project.
