Mom of toddler found under La. bridge surrenders to police

Published September 06, 2016

Associated Press

The mother of a 2-year-old boy who was found buried in a garbage bag under a New Orleans-area bridge has turned herself in to police.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office said in a statement that 21-year-old Gabrielle Whittington surrendered Sunday. Deputies had issued second-degree murder warrants Friday for both Whittington and 21-year-old Onterio Thompson, who were the parents of Timothy Thompson IV.

The boy's decomposed body was found July 6 in a bag on the east bank of the Mississippi River levee near the Huey P. Long Bridge.

Both parents were initially arrested on charges of unlawful disposal of human remains and obstruction of justice.

Pathologists later determined that the boy's death was a homicide.

Onterio Thompson is currently in custody on unrelated charges. It's unclear whether they have attorneys.
