Milwaukee sheriff warns against religious sites amid Middle East unrest

The sheriff of Milwaukee County is asking citizens to be particularly vigilant about activities around local religious sites due to hostilities in the Middle East.

Sheriff David Clarke says there's a potential for agitators to attack or vandalize synagogues, temples and mosques in protest. Clarke says if citizens see any suspicious activity, particularly during off-worship times and at night, call local law enforcement.

The military says Israeli jets struck three sites in Gaza Monday after a rocket was launched at Israel, disrupting a relative lull in the war-torn territory at the start of a major Muslim holiday.

The strikes followed an almost 12-hour pause in fighting and came as international efforts intensified to end the three-week war between Israel and Hamas. The U.N. called for a cease-fire in the conflict that has already killed over 1,030 Palestinians, 43 Israeli soldiers and three civilians on the Israeli side.
